Meridian Architecture — Melbourne Studio

Meridian is a two-director architecture studio working out of Collingwood, in Melbourne's inner north. We design residential homes, commercial fitouts, and adaptive reuse projects — buildings that earn their materials and respond to their site rather than impose on it. Founded in 2018, the practice takes on only four commissions at a time so that both directors can work on every project personally, from the first site visit to practical completion.

Most of our buildings sit within twenty kilometres of the studio. We work across new builds, heritage-adjacent additions, and the careful conversion of existing structures, and we favour restraint over ornament — fewer materials, considered detailing, and a brief that has been properly interrogated before a single line is drawn. The projects below span a 1920s boot factory turned family home, a cantilevered coastal residence on the Brighton foreshore, and a community library now under construction in Fitzroy. Each one was overseen by the same two people who will answer the phone when you call.

Perry Street warehouse interior — saw-tooth roof trusses above a new timber living volume

Collingwood Warehouse

A boot factory from the 1920s, empty for a decade. The clients bought it knowing the roof leaked and the floor sloped. They wanted a home that kept the bones. We inserted a timber volume inside the masonry shell — a house within a factory. No plasterboard in the building.

Brighton foreshore — blackbutt-clad upper level cantilevered over an off-form concrete base

Brighton Coastal Residence

A family of five on a narrow foreshore lot that drops four metres from street to sand. The upper level cantilevers 3.6 metres over the stabilised dune. Two volumes — a concrete plinth dug into the geology, a timber box floating above it. The cladding will silver over five years. The house is designed to age with the coast.

Reading room with folded timber ceiling, central courtyard visible through glazing

Fitzroy Community Library

Open competition, triangular corner site, forty-two entries. Our scheme refused corridors. One continuous reading room wraps around a central courtyard under a folded CLT roof. Three full-height glass panels pivot open to dissolve the edge between the library and Gertrude Street. The CLT arrived from Gippsland in February. Under construction now.
