Australian Manufacturer Websites Stuck in Catalogue Mode

Manufacturer website design in Australia is stuck in catalogue mode. What procurement buyers check before enquiring, and the RFQ flow that beats a dead form.

Picture a procurement engineer shortlisting suppliers for a run of four thousand machined brackets. The drawing is open on one screen and eleven browser tabs are open on the other. Before she can put a name on the shortlist she needs three things from each supplier: whether they can hold the tolerance on the drawing, whether they hold the certification her customer's audit will ask about, and roughly how long a run that size takes. She gives each website about ninety seconds.

Two of the sites she opens are Australian. Neither answers any of the three questions. One has a Capabilities page reading "CNC Machining. Fabrication. Assembly." — three bullet points, no numbers. The other has a capability statement PDF dated 2019, sitting behind a form that wants her phone number before it will hand over a document about drilling. The third supplier is offshore, and its site lists materials, a tolerance range and a certificate number, and its quote form has a file upload that accepts a STEP file. She's not being disloyal when she enquires there first. She's being efficient.

The scene is invented; the pattern turns up in nearly every industrial site we audit. And it points at an uncomfortable argument: Australian manufacturers lose B2B work during the research stage, before a human being is involved, and the reason is almost never price. It's that their websites are catalogues in an era when the buyer is running a specification search.

The reflex response is usually "we should add online ordering". That's the wrong instinct, and the real fix is far less glamorous than a webshop.

The shortlist happens before you ever hear from anyone

B2B research is invisible to you. A consumer who abandons a checkout leaves a trace. A design engineer who opens your site, can't find a tolerance range and closes the tab leaves nothing at all. Analytics record a visit. The pipeline records nothing, because there was nothing to record.

So the enquiry volume feels like a market problem. Quoting is quiet, the phone rings less, and the natural explanation is that work has gone offshore or the sector's soft. Sometimes that's true. Often what's actually happened is that the qualifying stage of the sale moved onto the web and the website was never rebuilt to handle it. The enquiries you do get arrive pre-shortlisted, because the buyer already decided you were plausible. The ones you never get are the ones where the site failed to make that case.

It's the same failure mode as traffic that doesn't turn into enquiries, just with higher stakes per lost visit. A café loses a $60 booking. A fabrication shop loses a $40,000 job and never knows the visit happened.

What catalogue mode actually looks like

Catalogue mode is a specific, recognisable set of choices. Most of them made sense in 2011.

The product range is an image grid with no readable text, so nothing in it can be searched or indexed. The capability statement is a PDF — often gated, often years old, always invisible to Google. Certifications appear as a footer logo with no scope, no certificate number, no issuing body. There's one "Contact Us" form asking for name, email and message, which is exactly the wrong three fields. Lead times, minimum order quantities, plant list, materials and tolerance capability appear nowhere. Nothing has its own URL except the top-level pages, so an engineer searching for a specific process lands on the homepage and starts again.

Underneath all of it the site is slow and awkward on a phone, which matters more than manufacturers expect — plenty of industrial browsing happens standing next to a machine on patchy reception in a shed in Dandenong South or Wingfield.

None of this is negligence. It's a brochure built for people who already knew the business, being asked to do a job it was never designed for.

The capability page is the page that closes

If you fix one page, fix this one. A capability page that works answers the questions a buyer would otherwise have to ring and ask, in specifics rather than adjectives. "High precision" is not a specification. A number is.

TOLERANCES
The range you routinely hold
The band you hold in normal production, and the tighter band you can hold with inspection. Engineers filter suppliers on exactly this. Vague claims read as "we don't measure".
CERTIFICATIONS
Standard, scope, certificate number
ISO 9001, welding qualifications, food-grade or medical scope, AS/NZS compliance. Name the standard, the scope it covers and the certifying body. A logo alone is unverifiable, and buyers treat it that way.
MATERIALS
What you run, what you don't
Grades, alloys, sheet thickness ranges, plastics. Saying what you don't process is as valuable as saying what you do, and it stops the wrong enquiries.
PLANT LIST
Machines, sizes, envelopes
Bed sizes, axis counts, press capacity, crane limits, oven dimensions. The fastest way for a buyer to self-qualify, and the block most commonly missing on Australian industrial sites.
LEAD TIME & MOQ
Typical, stated honestly
A typical range, caveated as depending on the job. Buyers assume the worst when nothing is stated, and the assumption flatters you less than the real number would.

None of that is commercially sensitive — your competitors already know what machines you run, because they were at the same auction. It's also the raw material for search visibility: every specific term on that page is a phrase somebody types into Google when they need it. Adjectives rank for nothing.

Where you hold certification, link the standard rather than just naming it — ISO for the international standards, Standards Australia for AS/NZS references. It reads as confidence, and it gives a buyer somewhere to verify what they're being told.

The dead contact form is costing you the qualified enquiries

A three-field contact form is optimised for the wrong visitor. It's easy for a tyre-kicker and useless for a buyer with a drawing, because it gives them nowhere to put the one thing that defines the job.

Replace it with a request-for-quote flow. The fields that matter:

  1. File upload accepting drawings — PDF, DXF, STEP, IGES — with multiple files allowed. This is the whole point. Without it, every serious enquiry becomes an email thread before it becomes a quote.
  2. Quantity, and whether it's a one-off, a batch or an ongoing schedule. Pricing behaviour changes completely across those three.
  3. Material or grade, free text, because the buyer often has a preference and sometimes wants a recommendation.
  4. Target date, so you can triage the urgent from the speculative.
  5. Delivery postcode, because freight is a real number, better raised early than at quote stage.
  6. Contact and company, last, once they've already invested effort.

Then the part almost everyone skips: an automatic acknowledgement with a reference number, a plain statement of when a human will respond, and routing that sends the enquiry to the right person rather than an info@ inbox somebody checks on Thursdays. A buyer who submits a drawing into silence assumes it vanished, and their next move is the next supplier on the list. It's the same discipline that fixes service-business sites generally — we've catalogued the common failures elsewhere, and this is a higher-value case of the same thing.

Do the sum yourself rather than taking our word for it. If a manufacturer averages $18,000 per won job and converts one quote in five, a single extra RFQ a fortnight is roughly $90,000 a year in additional work. Illustrative numbers, not a promise — put your real ones in. Most operators find the threshold for a rebuild paying for itself is low enough to be slightly annoying.

Product data has to be findable, not just present

The second structural fix is getting product and process information out of PDFs and into pages.

Every product family, part series or process capability a buyer might search for should have its own URL with real text on it — description, specification, applications, and part numbers written as characters rather than baked into an image. Search engines can't read a spec sheet drawn as a JPEG, and neither can the AI assistants that increasingly sit between a buyer and a supplier list. If your part numbers exist only inside a PDF, you're invisible to the exact search where you'd win.

Structured data helps here too. Product markup from schema.org describes SKUs, materials and specifications in a form machines read reliably. It's not a ranking trick; it's making your catalogue legible to software. For a manufacturer with hundreds of line items this is a data problem before it's a design problem, which is why the build usually means generating pages from a spreadsheet or an ERP export rather than hand-typing them. That's ordinary custom development work, and it's where a hand-built site earns its cost against a template.

Keep the PDFs. Datasheets are how the industry works and a buyer will want one for the job folder. Just stop making the PDF the only copy.

Why the e-commerce instinct is usually wrong

At some point in this conversation someone suggests selling online. Resist it, at least at first.

Most industrial B2B pricing is quote-based for good reasons: volume breaks, material price movement, freight that depends on pallet dimensions, account customers on trade terms, minimum order quantities. Forcing that into a cart means either publishing prices you'll want to change monthly, or building a cart that can't show a price — a dead end at the exact moment the buyer was engaged. A cart also carries real cost in payment handling, tax treatment, freight rules, stock accuracy and returns, and that budget returns more spent on capability pages, product data and the RFQ flow.

The exceptions are specific. Consumables, spare parts and standard stock lines genuinely suit online ordering, because the buyer knows what they want and just wants it to arrive. If that's a meaningful slice of revenue, build a shop for that slice. For large customers on repeat schedules, a login showing order history, drawings and reorder buttons beats a public checkout — but that's a phase two project, once the front of the funnel works.

Buyers read your website as evidence about your process

This part is hard to measure and easy to underestimate. An Australian manufacturer competing against offshore supply sells on quality systems, communication, traceability and the ability to fix a problem in a week rather than a quarter. Those are all claims about process. And the only evidence of your process a buyer has, at the moment they decide whether to enquire, is your website.

A site with a broken enquiry form, a 2019 copyright line, three dead links and a certification logo with no scope is making an argument about document control, whether you intended it or not. It isn't a fair inference. It is a completely predictable one — the same inference you'd draw about a supplier whose quote arrived with the wrong revision number.

Speed carries the same signal. A page that takes eight seconds on a phone reads as a business that hasn't looked at its own front door recently, and it loses visitors before the argument gets made. Australian manufacturing has a real trust advantage: local support, local standards, local accountability, and a legal system the buyer can actually reach if a batch goes wrong. Catalogue-mode websites throw that advantage away by looking less organised than the offshore competitor they're compared against.

Where to start

If you're looking at a site built a decade ago, the order matters more than the total scope.

Start with one capability page written in numbers — tolerances, certifications with scope, materials, plant, lead times. That page alone changes how a buyer reads your business, and it can go live in days. Then replace the contact form with an RFQ that accepts drawings and confirms receipt automatically. Then get product data out of PDFs and onto indexable pages, working down from the lines that make you the most money. The full rebuild can wait until those three are earning.
