Wix or a custom website

Wix is the surprising result in our study. Of the 707 Wix sites we tested, only 10% scored poor on mobile, the lowest rate of any platform with 100 or more sites, and well below the 27.3% across the whole sample. That deserves a fair hearing before anyone talks you out of it. This page covers where Wix is strong, where it still falls short, what its plans look like, and when to stay.

All sites 6.9s · Google good: 2.5s

Wix's 707 sites averaged 66.1 on Lighthouse mobile performance (median 67) against 62 across the full sample. Only 10% scored under 50, compared with 47.2% for Squarespace and 28.7% for WordPress. If your fear is a site that fails outright, Wix is the platform in this study (among those with 100 or more sites) least likely to be one.

The other half of the picture is time to main content. The median Wix site took 6.6s to paint its largest element, a little quicker than the all-site median of 6.9s but still more than two and a half times Google's 2.5 second bar. Wix rarely fails badly. It also rarely feels fast. That is the ceiling a hosted builder gives you, and it is the gap a custom build exists to close.

How to read this

A few cautions. Each site was run once through throttled mobile lab testing, so single scores are noisy even though averages across 707 sites are stable. Wix sites were identified from page fingerprints at 0.7 confidence or higher, and all 707 cleared that. The sample leans toward small local service businesses. The study also cannot tell you how a given Wix site is built, only how it performed.

§ 03What Wix does well

Where Wix is the better tool

01
Freedom in the editor
Put anything anywhere
Wix's drag-anywhere editor lets owners build layouts the more structured builders will not allow. If you know what you want and do not want to wait on anyone, this is genuinely empowering.
02
Business tools in one place
Bookings, events, members
Scheduling, event ticketing and member areas are Wix products rather than bolt-ons, and its app market fills most remaining gaps for modest money.
03
Less likely to score badly
10% poor
The lowest poor rate of any platform with 100 or more sites in our study, with a mean of 66.1. Wix has done real work on performance and it shows in the data.
04
A path to custom code
Velo
Wix's own development layer lets a developer add logic and database collections without leaving the platform, a real stepping stone for owners who outgrow the basic editor.
05
A free tier to try
Start without paying
Wix lists a free plan, so you can build and judge the editor before spending anything.
§ 04Where custom code wins

What a hand-coded site changes

01
Where the speed ceiling sits
6.6s median LCP
Wix sites cluster near the middle, not near the 2.5 second line. A page that ships only the code it uses has no such floor. We cannot prove from this study that hand-coded sites beat 6.6s, since its "Custom" label only means no platform was detected, but the headroom is plain.
02
Ownership
A site that outlives the plan
A Wix site runs on Wix's hosting, so it exists only while the plan is active. A custom build arrives as a repository you can host anywhere, with no subscription needed to keep it alive.
03
Bookings that match your business
Logic that is yours
Wix Bookings handles standard appointments well. Quote flows with pricing logic, service areas, multi-step intake and sales-team routing are where an editor starts to bend, and where a custom form pays for itself.
04
URLs you control
Addresses that follow your structure
Wix puts blog posts under /post/ and store items under /product-page/. On a custom site your URL structure follows your information architecture, not the platform's defaults.
05
A site no one else has
Not a template
A custom design is built to your market. It is the difference between looking like a good Wix site and looking like the best site in your category.
§ 05Price

What each side costs

Ours first: custom builds start from $8,000 AUD, fixed price, and the floor does not move. The rows below are Wix's public plans, read directly off its pricing page.

Light
Entry paid plan
Lists a free domain for the first year and 2 GB storage. The page displayed 17.77 a month on annual billing to our fetch.
Core
Second tier
Adds a basic marketing suite, basic eCommerce and 50 GB storage. Displayed as 29.77 a month.
Business
Marked recommended
Standard eCommerce, 100 GB storage and 10 site collaborators. Displayed as 39.77 a month.
Business Elite
Top tier
Unlimited storage, advanced eCommerce and developer platform, 100 collaborators. Displayed as 159.77 a month.
Wix over three years
No AUD figure
We could not obtain an Australian dollar price: Wix shows plans in local currency by region, so we do not convert or multiply a number we cannot stand behind. Read the AUD price from Wix's checkout and multiply it by 36.
Our custom build
From $8,000 AUD
Fixed price, once. The optional Care Plan (hosting, small updates, monitoring) is $229 a month, which is $8,244 over three years if you take it.
The honest comparison
Wix wins on cash
On subscription cost alone Wix is far cheaper for years. A custom build earns its price through speed, ownership and conversion, and only for businesses where the website carries real revenue.

Source: https://www.wix.com/plans, read 5 October 2026. Wix states that prices and currency vary by location and that any USD prices on the page are for reference. The page served to our server was localised to EUR, so the figures above are shown as displayed and are not Australian dollar prices. Check the checkout page for what you would pay. Plans change; confirm on the platform before you decide.

Full price ladder, including the $1,500 Fix Sprint and the $495 Blueprint, is on the pricing page.

§ 06When to stay on Wix

Stay on Wix if

  1. 01Your site is working and you are getting the enquiries you need. A site that earns its keep is not a problem to solve.
  2. 02You rely on Wix Bookings, Events or Members and they fit how you operate. Rebuilding those costs real money and usually only pays back if your flow is unusual.
  3. 03You edit the site yourself, often. Wix's editor is one of the friendliest around, and handing routine changes to a developer is a step backwards for many owners.
  4. 04Search is not how customers find you. If your business runs on referrals, repeat customers and Google Business Profile, the rest matters less.
  5. 05Your budget is under $8,000 and the site is not yet a revenue channel. Tidy the pages, compress the images and keep the plan.

If you are unsure which side you are on, the $495 Blueprint is the cheaper way to find out. It is a paid diagnostic, and the fee comes off a build if one starts within 60 days.

§ 07Moving, six weeks

What moving looks like

Plan on rebuilding a Wix site rather than converting it. We do not rely on any export: we capture the text, images and structure from the live site itself, which is why week one is an inventory of every page, image and form before anything is designed.

Six weeks is the plan we scope against for a typical small business site. Larger sites, shops and booking systems take longer, and we say so at quote stage, not after.

01
Week 1
Capture everything from the live site
We crawl the site, save the text and original images, and record each page's address and traffic. Wix blog posts live under /post/ and store items under /product-page/, so we list those paths first. Booking, form and member data is exported wherever Wix allows it.
02
Week 2
Decide what the site is for
We cut what no longer earns its place and plan the pages that do. Because the whole site is rebuilt anyway, this is the cheapest moment to fix navigation, page hierarchy and calls to action.
03
Weeks 3 and 4
Build
Hand-coded pages with your booking, quote or enquiry flow built to how your team works. A staging link is shared as pages land, so you can react before it is finished, not after.
04
Week 5
Redirects, content and testing
Every changed address gets a 301 redirect so the rankings built on old /post/ and /product-page/ paths carry over. We migrate content, test forms and payments, and compare Lighthouse results on the old and new site.
05
Week 6
Launch and keep Wix running a while
We change the DNS records to point at the new site. If Wix registered your domain you can usually leave it there and only change records. Keep the Wix plan until redirects are confirmed, then cancel. We watch Search Console for errors afterwards.
